“I wanted to write to offer you my congratulations on your success in the elections and your appointment as Prime Minister of Serbia.
Your appointment comes at a crucial moment on Serbia's EU path. Accession negotiations demand a long and challenging process of reform, but also present opportunities for Serbia under your leadership.
Economic and rule of law reforms, the fight against corruption, strong and independent institutions, dedication to democratic values, as well as normalisation of relations with Kosovo, are all important for the EU and for Serbia.
I recognise your commitment to tackling these issues and to continuing the dialogue with Kosovo. This should build confidence, including from investors, and bring increasing stability and prosperity to the people of Serbia.
With your chairmanship of the OSCE approaching in 2015, Serbia will come increasingly under the international spotlight. I welcome your desire to continue to develop regional relations, and your plans to make an early visit to Sarajevo.
It is important also for Serbia to be aligning itself with wider EU foreign policy. Russia's actions in Ukraine represent a challenge to international law, and a threat to European stability. I hope that Serbia will soon join the EU and condemn Russia's illegal actions.
I have been clear that the EU must change and reform. I want to reassure you that the UK remains committed to Serbia's future as an EU member and to offer our continued support in helping you achieve that goal.
I look forward to working with you, and to strengthening our bilateral and commercial links as Serbia moves closer towards membership,” Cameron wrote.
