The Serbian government adopted at its session today a decision to engage all the necessary forces of the Serbian Army, Ministry of the Interior and Gendarmerie, the Ministry of Transport and health services in the evacuation of passengers from the roads covered by snowdrifts.
During the last night and today, the army, police and road workers evacuated about a thousand snowbound passengers, and several hundred more are trapped in snowdrifts and they will receive the necessary assistance over the next few hours.
The Serbian government urged citizens not to go on trips until all risks have been eliminated. The traffic has been stopped on the roads covered by snowdrifts and it will not be re-opened until the situation has gone back to normal.
The navigation on the Danube River has also been suspended. The government ordered the competent authorities to use all the machinery available to clean up the consequences of the windstorm and heavy snowdrifts.
