Providing conditions for return of displaced persons to Kosovo necessary

Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Mrkic said today in a meeting with UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons Chaloka Beyan that there is a long-standing problem of a large number of internally displaced persons from Kosovo-Metohija.

Mrkic pointed out to the absence of the basic conditions for their return to the province, and informed Beyan on the efforts of the government of Serbia, despite budgetary restrictions, to invest in resolving the issue.
He expressed the hope that Beyan will make recommendations for achieving durable solutions for internally displaced persons in terms of facilitating their return to Kosovo, and in terms of improving their living conditions.
Mrkic said that they need substantial financial resources and commitment of the international community.
Beyan stressed the importance of insight into the situation on the ground, and said that we should work towards finding durable solutions.
Mrkic and Beyan agreed to continue cooperation on this issue, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
