Significant potential for further deepening bilateral relations with Sri Lanka

Minister of Foreign Affairs in a caretaker capacity Marko Đurić spoke by telephone today with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Vijitha Herath regarding the enhancement of bilateral relations, the strengthening of political dialogue, and opportunities for developing economic cooperation.

Đurić said that, despite the geographical distance, Serbia and Sri Lanka are linked by a traditional friendship and cooperation rooted in the principles of the United Nations and the values of the Non-Aligned Movement.

He expressed gratitude to Sri Lanka for its principled and consistent support for preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia, a position reflected in its consistent refusal to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo.

Emphasising the significant potential for further deepening bilateral relations, rooted in the decades-long friendship between the two countries, Đurić highlighted Serbia’s interest in intensifying political dialogue, exchanging high-level and top-level visits, and advancing economic cooperation.

Pointing to the potential for strengthened cooperation in agriculture and tourism, the head of Serbian diplomacy suggested that Sri Lanka consider participating in the International Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad and the International Tourism Fair in Belgrade.

He invited Sri Lanka to participate in Specialised Expo 2027, to be held in Belgrade from 15 May to 15 August next year, noting that more than 140 countries have confirmed their participation so far, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
