The minister talked with about 40 people from of Cacak, Belgrade, Pirot, Loznica and Subotica, whose criticism mostly concerned the work of courts. Stojkovic repeated that in the future citizens would be able to pose questions by telephone every last Saturday of the month.
The minister said that the government had sent changes to the Law on the fight against organised crime to the Assembly to harmonise it with the Law on criminal procedure.
Stojkovic explained that the Law on criminal procedure states that the accused can be held in custody up to four years, until the end of the first procedure, while the Law addressing the fight against organised crime, currently being processed by the Assembly, stipulates that this time should be two years.
According to him, the Ministry of Justice noticed this and reacted immediately, requesting that two years be stipulated in this new law, as a “lex specialis”, and should be harmonised with regulations of the Law on criminal proceedings so that this time should be four years.
Stojkovic said that this was done to prevent the absurd situation in which the accused, due to the repeal of the Supreme Court verdict and a retrial, should be awarded bail in spite of the possibility that they may influence witnesses and disrupt the trial process.
