The Ministry of the Interior announced that the German police, based on information and data provided by the Serbian Department for Combating Organised Crime, found and confiscated the stolen painting “Forest's Edge (Flight into Egypt)” authored by Jan Brueghel the Elder.
“Forest's Edge (Flight into Egypt)”
The oil on copper, created in the 17th century, is of great artistic and material value, and it was stolen in late 2011 in Paris.
After learning that the painting is in Belgrade and after a number of operational activities undertaken, the Serbian police arrested two people and discovered that the painting was smuggled to Germany in order to obtain the necessary certificates and for further resale.
The police then also found and temporarily seized two precious icons, which are suspected to be from Western Europe.
Police continue work on this case in order to detect and identify the perpetrator of this crime, the statement added.
