The participants included Assistant Ministers Cedomir Backovic and Vojkan Simic, as well as representatives of the High Judicial Council and State Prosecutorial Council, Serbian Association of Judges, Prosecutors' Association of Serbia, the Judicial Academy, the Bar Chamber of Belgrade and the Faculty of Law in Belgrade.
Coordinator of the group for work on the new national judiciary strategy Cedomir Backovic underlined that one of the main objectives of that document is the establishment of the rule of law and the regaining of citizens’ trust in the work of judiciary institutions in Serbia.
Assistant Minister of Justice and Public Administration Vojkan Simic stated that a national strategy for the reform of the judiciary must be worked out in the shortest time possible, as well as an accompanying action plan.
The current situation in the Serbian judiciary was also discussed at the meeting.
Defects of the judiciary reform that had been carried out in the previous period were pointed out, which affected not only the efficiency of the network of courts and prosecutor’s offices and caused accumulation of court cases and overburdened judges and prosecutors, but it also hampered the functioning of the entire judiciary system in Serbia, it is added in the statement.
