Vladimir Lazarevic and Vojislav Kostunica
General Lazarevic expressed readiness to fulfil this obligation in the interest of the state and especially pointed out that there is only one truth, and that the army under his command only defended the country and committed no war crimes.
Lazarevic pointed out that the defence of the state and national interest have always been the top command for him, and that he has served honourably and faithfully to his country and his people. Our country is struggling today to preserve Kosovo-Metohija, and many soldiers gave their lives courageously for Kosovo, General Lazarevic said. He also said that the battle for Kosovo-Metohija is still going on, which urged him to make the only possible decision – to serve his country to an end.
The Prime Minister said that the Serbian government, the state of Serbia, and he personally, highly appreciate and respect this patriotic, moral and honourable decision of General Lazarevic. Kostunica expressed firm belief that General Lazarevic acted in accordance with the long tradition of the Serbian army whose officers always fought until the end for the interest of the people and the country.
Kostunica stressed that the Serbian government and the state of Serbia will offer all necessary guarantees for General Lazarevic and will fully support his defence.
General Lazarevic will go to The Hague next week voluntarily, accompanied by Serbian government members.
