A:

Operation to suppress crime in Serbian Army leads to 12 arrests

Belgrade, 22 December 2011

The Ministry of Defence stated that during a joint operation of the Military Security Agency (VBA), the Prosecutor’s Office for organised crime in Belgrade and the High Prosecutor's Office in Prokuplje, 12 persons were taken into custody today on suspicion of misuse of official position and theft of fuel from Umac storage facility in Prokuplje.

This is part of a broader operation that has been conducted by the Ministry of Defence for some time with the aim of rooting out criminal activities in the Serbian Army and the Ministry which are causing great financial damage to the Serbian budget.

Today's arrest is the result of an intensive operation of the VBA, which started after it was discovered on 11 February this year that large quantities of fuel were missing at Umac storage, and analysis revealed that soil and water around the warehouse were not polluted.

Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac awarded VBA members who participated in this operation of suppressing crime in the Serbian Army, the statement added.
