Head of the Census Department at Serbian Statistics Office Snezana Lakcevic said today that the latest Census of Population, Households and Dwellings in the Republic of Serbia, which was carried out in October, showed that there are around 295,000 citizens of Serbia who work and live abroad.
Lakcevic explained that the data on Serbian citizens working and living abroad was obtained by declaration of their family members who remained in Serbia.
The average age of Serbs in the diaspora is 33, and our citizens stay abroad for 13 years on average.
Assistant Director of the Serbian Statistics Office Zoran Jancic said that the Office is satisfied with the census results, but noted that it failed in three municipalities in southern Serbia - Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja, where the Albanian population refused to participate.
The census, which includes registration of population, agriculture and the collection of data for the needs of national accounts costs €39.5 million, of which €19.5 million is provided by the EU and €20 million by Serbia, Jancic specified.
