Lucas pointed out that this plaque represents recognition to the work and dedication of the Serbian police in combating high-tech crime, especially all forms of abuse and exploitation of children.
Police Director of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior Milorad Veljovic underlined that high-tech crime is one of the most common forms of transnational crime and pointed out that one of the priorities in the ministry’s work is the protection of children from all forms of abuse, particularly sexual abuse over the Internet and telecommunication systems.
The expansion of Internet domains that contain pornography materials of sexual abuse of children and minors prompted the Serbian police to start the "Armageddon" operation, whose main goal is to combat this negative social phenomenon through international cooperation, the Police Director explained.
In the fight against high-tech crime, the Serbian police have established excellent cooperation not only with the United States, but with many other countries such as Germany, Great Britain, France and Brazil.
This year the Department for the Fight against High Technology Crime has pressed charges in 17 cases for display, acquisition and possession of pornography material and use of minors for pornography, Veljovic stated.
One of the most recent joint actions with the United States resulted in the arrest of one person in Novi Sad who had paedophile material.
The “Armageddon” operation continues and as part of it, one person was arrested today in Sabac.
The presentation of the plaque of gratitude was attended by US Deputy Ambassador to Serbia Earle Litzenberger and Head of the Department for the Fight against High Technology Crime Sasa Zivanovic.
