Dacic said at the celebration of the Interior Ministry Day and the Police Day held at the teaching centre in Makis that it is necessary to improve the financial position of the police.
Investment in the police is investment in security of the state and its defence and preservation of national interests, he said and urged state authorities to assist in resolving the financial situation of police officers.
The First Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that the police have an important role in maintaining the security of citizens and the state, adding that the task of the police is to defend territorial integrity, maintain public order and peace and fight against organised crime and terrorism.
Each member of the Ministry of the Interior who performs his tasks today in difficult conditions is a kind of hero, Dacic underlined and noted that there is a huge disparity in what the state and citizens expect from the police and what the state gives to police members.
Dacic expressed satisfaction with the fact that citizens’ trust in police is growing year in year out.
He stated the fact that in last 20 years, about 1,000 police officers were killed on duty and underlined that the state will continue to look after their families.
Dacic pointed to a high level of training of the Serbian police, particularly of special units that are among the most elite units in Europe, and to selfless sacrifice of fire-fighters who save people's lives.
The First Deputy Prime Minister pointed to the great contribution which the Ministry of the Interior has given to Serbia’s path towards the EU through issuing new identity documents, but also in the fight against organised crime.
He also pointed to successful establishment of regional cooperation, as well as political cooperation with many EU states, which contributes to the effective fight against all forms of crime.
The celebration was attended by Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, ministers and a large number of citizens.
The marking of the Day of the Ministry of the Interior and the Police Day was also attended by Director of the Security and Intelligence Agency Sasa Vukadinovic, police officials of the countries of the region, Chief of General Staff of the Serbian Army, General Miloje Miletic, church dignitaries and athletes.
The Ministry and police members demonstrated a high level of training in the exercises they carried out in Makis.
The observance of 200th anniversary of the Ministry and of the Patron Saint’s Day of the Ministry and the police – Holy Trinity, was finished with an exhibition of armament and military equipment.
On the occasion of the Day of the Ministry of the Interior and the Police Day, on behalf of Serbian President Boris Tadic, Dacic
awarded 50 medals for diligent service to members of the Interior Ministry.
The Day of the Ministry of the Interior and the Police Day are observed in the memory of 15 June 1862 when the Serbian Gendarmerie, on the Trinity holiday, played a crucial role in the conflicts at Belgrade Cukur Cesma fountain and in the next two days during the Turkish bombing of Belgrade.
Dacic also laid a wreath to the memorial plaque to the first minister of the interior Jakov Nenadovic in Kneza Milosa street.
