Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica
The Constitutional Charter precisely envisions the issue of parliamentary elections in the state union, Kostunica said, recalling that the Serbian parliament approved the Law on Immediate Elections by a two-third majority.
The Montenegrin parliament adopted the Charter two years ago, but Montenegro is now trying to avoid the immediate election provision.
Kostunica pointed out that Montenegro’s reasons for attempting to avoid the immediate elections are strictly internal and that the Montenegrin political leadership should solve this problem alone, not involving Serbia. Serbia cannot accept violation of the Constitution through an agreement reached by politicians, Kostunica said.
The Prime Minister said that the EU, as the mediator of the Belgrade Accord, should help Montenegro overcome its problem in the spirit of the Belgrade Accord. Any other attempt to address this problem would additionally weaken the state union’s institutions, Kostunica said in a written statement.
