Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica
Following a Serbian parliamentary session, at which the lawmakers adopted the Law on the election of deputies to the Serbia-Montenegrin parliament, Kostunica expressed satisfaction with the adoption of this law by a two-thirds majority.
He warned that the Serbia-Montenegrin parliamentary elections cannot be postponed or avoided. He voiced hope that President of Serbia-Montenegro Svetozar Marovic will respect the Constitutional Charter and subsequently call the elections, as he is “the first person obliged to respect this document”.
By adopting this law today, Serbia fulfilled its obligations both to Europe and the state union, Kostunica said, noting that Montenegro should now do the same.
Kostunica said he will meet with President Boris Tadic tonight to discuss the situation in Republika Srpska following the decision of the High Representative in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Paddy Ashdown.
Yugoslavia was signatory to the Dayton Accords, Kostunica said, pointing out that there cannot be one-sided violation of the accords. Kostunica also recalled the special agreement between Serbia-Montenegro and Republika Srpska.
The Prime Minister confirmed he will meet with UNMIK chief Soren Jessen-Petersen. He said he will take a stance that Belgrade must equally participate in Kosovo decentralisation talks. He also said he will advocate the Serbian government’s plan for Kosovo-Metohija, and went on to say that a compromise needs to be reached between the Serbian government’s and UNMIK’s plans.
