Global Network of Women ICT Decision-Makers presented

The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society, in cooperation with the UN mission in Serbia, organised today a panel discussion themed "Equal access to information and communication technologies: The path to dignified work for women".
A statement by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society states that with this event, the centenary of the International Women's Day (1911-2011) was observed in the Club of Deputies.
During the panel discussion, the Global Network of Women ICT Decision-Makers was presented, which was founded at the initiative of the Serbian Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society and with the support of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN.
Minister of Telecommunications and Information Society Jasna Matic participated in the 18th conference of plenipotentiaries of the ITU, held last October in Mexico.
On this occasion Matic presented the initiative of the Ministry, under the auspices of the ITU, to set up a global network of women in leadership positions in the field of ICT, which will deal with raising living standards around the world with a special focus on children and women through the promotion and use of information and communication technologies.
At the conference the ministry also promoted marking the International Girls in ICT Day, which will be held every fourth Thursday in April, when girls will have an opportunity to learn about the possibilities of education and work in the ICT field.
At the proposal of Serbia, amendments to Resolution 70 which deals with women's issues were adopted in Mexico, which enabled the establishment of the Global Network of Women ICT Decision-Makers
Matic and Secretary General of the ITU Hamadoun Touré signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Serbian Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society and the ITU in Geneva on 17 December 2010.
This document is a basis for implementation of Resolution 70 of the ITU and institutionalisation of cooperation in this initiative, with which the Ministry is appointed to administer the network over next two years as a secretariat, it is added in the statement.
