Second expert mission of EC in Belgrade until 3 March

The Serbian government’s Office for European Integration stated that the second expert mission of the European Commission (EC), which will analyse in more depth Serbia’s answers to the Questionnaire in order to prepare the Opinion on her request for EU membership has started today and will last until 3 March.

EC experts will discuss with representatives of Serbia’s relevant institutions the work of independent regulatory bodies – the way of their work and financing, competencies, respect for independence and ways of election and dismissal of members of these bodies, as well as reports and recommendations elaborated by these bodies.

On the first day, the EC mission will hold meetings with representatives of the Serbian ministries of finance, public administration and local self-government, the General Secretariat and a delegation of parliament members.

EC experts will also meet with representatives of domestic and foreign business community in Serbia, as well as with members of the Anti-Corruption Council.

They will also meet with representatives of the Serbian ministries of trade and services, finance, economy and regional development, culture and information, the interior, justice, telecommunications and information society, as well as with representatives of the National Bank of Serbia, the Commission for Competition Protection, the Commission for State Assistance, the Serbian Broadcasting Agency and the Serbian Telecommunications Agency.

This is the second of the three planned EC missions that are expected in the future.

The EC Questionnaire is an official instrument with which the EU assesses the readiness of a state to begin the accession process.

Based on responses received from Serbia which were delivered to the EC on 31 January, and the assessment of expert missions and responses to any additional questions, the EC elaborates the Opinion (Avis) on whether the country is ready to obtain the candidate status and whether it is ready for the next phase – the determination of a framework date for accession negotiations, which is decided by EU member states by consensus, reads the statement by the EU Integration Office.
