Serbia, Montenegro cooperate in environmental protection

Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulic and Minister of Sustainable Development and Tourism of Montenegro Predrag Sekulic said today that in order to speed up accession into the EU, the two countries should intensify cooperation in the field of environmental protection, particularly in waste management, climate change and nature conservation.

Dulic underlined that Serbia has significantly boosted the capacity of its recycling industry and pointed out that, after realising new investments planned for this year, our country may become a regional recycling centre which could meet the needs of neighbouring countries.

Sekulic said that Montenegro as the EU candidate country pays great importance to exchange of expertise in the field of environmental protection, and in the medium term to the issue of harmonisation of legislative and institutional framework in this field.

Dulic and Sekulic agreed that it is necessary to intensify regional cooperation among Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia regarding the Drina river basin, because after spring floods from the rivers of this basin tonnes of waste end up in the watercourse of the Drina and its tributaries.

The talks also touched on the exchange of experiences in building houses from the social welfare programme and legalisation of illegally erected buildings, reads a statement by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning.
