Expert mission of European Commission today in Serbia

The first expert mission of the European Commission (EC), which will further analyse the answers to the Questionnaire of the EC in order to prepare opinions on the application for membership, began today and will last until 25 February.
In a statement the EU Integration Office said that EC experts will meet with representatives of relevant institutions of our country to discuss judicial reform, fight against organised crime, corruption and police reform.
Results of application of the National Judicial Reform Strategy (2006–2011) will be examined as well as the work of the High Judicial Council and the State Prosecutors Council and training programmes of the Judicial Academy.
The topics of discussion will also be the changes to the Code of Criminal Procedure, the implementation of the Strategy and Action Plan to combat organised crime in 2009, the efficiency of investigations in cases of organised crime, cooperation and coordination of various police and judicial authorities, as well as the procedures of confiscation.
As for the fight against organised crime, there will be discussion about amendments to the Law on the criminal procedure, implementation of the Strategy and Action Plan for fight against organised crime, efficiency of investigations into cases of organised crime, cooperation and coordination of various police forces and judicial organs and nationalisation procedures. When it comes to combating corruption, experts from both sides will talk about the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy and Action Plan, and then share the latest information about the work of the Anti-Corruption Agency.
They will also discuss the implementation of the Law on the criminal procedure, the mechanisms of internal control and implementation of the Ethical Code in cases of corruption in public administration.
This is the first out of several scheduled European Commission missions that can be anticipated over the upcoming period.
The European Commission Questionnaire is an official instrument with which the EU assesses the readiness of a country to launch the accession process.
On the basis of Serbia’s responses, which the Commission received on 31 January, as well as on the basis of assessments by expert commissions and responses to any additional questions, the European Commission will draft an opinion on whether a country is ready for candidate status and the next stage – defining the framework date for initiating accession talks, an issue which will be decided through a consensus of EU countries.
