Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met with Belgian Minister of Defence Andre Flahaut and pointed to the importance of cooperation of Serbia-Montenegro and Belgium in the area of defence. They concluded that reforming the Serbia-Montenegrin army is of great importance for the country and region.
Flahaut said that the Agreement on military cooperation between Serbia-Montenegro and Belgium signed last year offers great perspectives in improving bilateral cooperation in the military sector.
Kostunica reiterated the importance of preserving the state union of Serbia-Montenegro and its EU integration, recalling the difficult position of the Serb ethnic population in Kosovo-Metohija. He said that institutional guarantees for Kosovo Serbs are prerequisite for securing the fundamental human right – right to life.
Flahaut said that Belgium offers its full support to Serbia-Montenegro’s EU integration. He also called on preservation of fundamental human rights in the southern Serbian province.
The two officials agreed that it is necessary to remove obstacles on Serbia-Montenegro’s road to the EU by fulfilling international obligations but that it is also necessary to consider the country’s stability.
