Speaking at a closing session of a conference on the role of churches in religious and interethnic cooperation, Kostunica said that in a place where religion is not free, people are also not free.
According to Kostunica, Serbia wants its churches and religious communities to be freed from inherited ideological tutorship and political manipulation, as is the case in Kosovo-Metohija.
The Prime Minister pointed to the importance of this pan-Christian meeting for the process of European integration and added that the religious structure in Serbia is already now fully European.
The church is aware of its role and future responsibility in building a modern Christian society, of which this conference is proof, said Kostunica, adding that we are all obliged to do as much as we can.
Saluting the organisers of the conference, the Prime Minister thanked them for their efforts and good will to give their contribution in these difficult times, because as he said, the role of church in the process of democratisation and harmonisation of social relations is undeniable.
Kostunica stressed that the government decided to establish free, full and efficient cooperation with churches and religious communities.
Serbian Minister of Religion Milan Radulovic and Minister of Diaspora Vojislav Vukcevic also attended the conference.
