Matic talks with European Commission Vice-President for Digital Agenda

Minister of Telecommunications and Information Society Jasna Matic met with European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes today to discuss trends in the electronic communications market and their legal framework in Serbia.

Matic and Kroes met on the fringes of the ICT 2010: Digitally Driven conference, taking place from 27 to 29 September in Brussels, and talked about the use of information and communication technology in Serbia and Europe, reads the Ministry’s statement.

The EU’s financial support of over €20 million for the implementation of a digital economy development project is of immense importance, primarily when it comes to the introduction of the digital TV signal and developing electronic administration in Serbia, Matic underlined, adding that Serbian scientists have been making use of all available funds in the remit of information and communication technology.

She declared that through IPA funds, the Ministry is implementing a project of support for the introduction of the digital TV signal, estimated at €10.5 million.

Matic informed Kroes about the new Law on electronic communication, the privatisation process of Telekom Srbija, the harmonisation of Serbia’s national politics and regulations with the EU’s regulatory framework and about EU-funded projects endorsing the development of the digital economy in Serbia.

Kroes voiced her support for the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society in its further use of the European Digital Agenda as a framework for liberalisation of all sectors of the telecommunications market.

The ICT 2010: Digitally Driven conference is the leading European forum at which research and innovation in the sector of information and telecommunications technology is presented.

The focal point of the conference is the allocation of the remaining funds from the Seventh Framework Programme for research and technological development (FP7), which is a mechanism for financing research in Europe in the period 2007–2013.

Scientists and experts from Serbia, dealing with information and telecommunications technology, have been actively involved in the FP7 programme and have achieved remarkable results.

The Digital Agenda Serbia is being implemented in line with the European model by the relevant Ministry so that citizens and business people may use this technology to improve the quality of life and increase the competitiveness of the Serbian economy.
