UN GIFT Serbia holds first board meeting

The Ministry of the Interior stated that as part of the UN Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN GIFT), the managing board of the UN GIFT Serbia project held its first meeting today.
UN GIFT Serbia is the first joint project of the Serbian government, the UNHCR, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) for combating human trafficking.
At the meeting it was established that a great deal has been achieved in Serbia regarding the fight agaist human trafficking, with a note that the project is well-timed and takes into consideration the real needs of the Strategy for Fighting Human Trafficking in Serbia.
National Coordinator for Fighting Human Trafficking Mitar Djuraskovic specified that 70% of activities envisaged by the National Plan of Action for Fighting Human Trafficking will be realised through this project.
Head of the IOM mission to Serbia Gregoire Goodstein thanked the representatives of donors – the Belgian government, the UN Global Initiative and the Swiss government – for having recognised the importance of the project and setting aside funds for its realisation to begin on 1 June, 2010.
Goodstein also thanked the Serbian government for having its Ministry of the Interior set aside office space at the Palace of Serbia where the project team will be working until the end of the project, ie 31 May 2012.
The total value of the project, whose goal is to implement the National Plan of Action for Fighting Human Trafficking, is a little over $1.6 million.
