Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica received today a delegation of US senators. Kostunica stressed the importance of good relations between the state union of Serbia-Montenegro and the US, and said that the state union is committed to European integrations. The feasibility study is expected to be completed in spring next year.
The Prime Minister pointed to the difficult position of Serb and non-Albanian populations in Kosovo-Metohija who do not enjoy basic human rights, first and foremost the freedom of movement. Kostunica said that it is necessary to give institutional guarantees to Serbs in the province and that Belgrade be included in dialogue, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
The Serbian government is committed to the cooperation with the Hague tribunal, but it takes care of the country's stability, Kostunica said. The best way is voluntary surrender of indictees.
The US senators said that human rights in Kosovo-Metohija must be respected and that churches and houses that were destroyed during the March violence must be rebuilt. They highlighted that it is necessary that Belgrade cooperate with the Hague tribunal.
Head of the Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija Nebojsa Covic also attended the meeting.
