CoE supports Serbia in combating organised crime, corruption

Council of Europe (CoE) Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland met with Minister of Justice Snezana Malovic today and affirmed the Council of Europe’s support to Serbia in its fight against organised crime and corruption, commending the activities undertaken in this goal by the Serbian authorities.
The Ministry says in a statement that Malovic acquainted Jagland with the overall reform process for the Serbian judiciary and the main activities implemented by the Ministry in order to improve the Serbian judicial system and reach the highest European standards.
The Minister of Justice said that Serbia is committed to EU accession, reiterating that work is under way to fulfil all conditions for joining the EU.
Jagland offered the continuation of the Council of Europe’s expert assistance in this sector to ensure continued endorsement of the reform process.
The importance of the reform process of the European Court for Human Rights was also recognised at the meeting, as well as the significance of executing this court’s decisions.
Malovic stressed that by adopting new laws, which the Ministry will soon propose, conditions will be created to fully execute these decisions.
She also briefed Jagland on new conventions which are currently being drafted and which Serbia will ratify in future, the statement adds.
