Five Serbian peacekeepers in Haiti unharmed

The Ministry of the Interior stated that, according to the initial information it received, all five Serbian participants in the peace mission in Haiti, which was hit by a massive earthquake yesterday, are safe and unharmed.

The statement adds that Haiti was hit by a strong earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre near the capital Port-au-Prince, adding that all communications and electricity supplies in the country are currently disrupted.
The Serbian Ministry of the Interior has contacted the Red Cross International Committee and the Serbian Mission in the UN in order to acquire further information, the statement adds.
Serbia began its mission in Haiti in March 2008, with the first contingent comprising five police officers. The current five-member contingent was sent there on July 5, 2009, the statement recalls, adding that 40 other countries have also deployed their peacekeepers in Haiti. According to the data, three Jordanian peacekeepers were killed in the earthquake.
