Special Anti-Terrorist Unit Day observed

The Serbian Interior Ministry issued a statement today that the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit Day was observed today.

The Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ) was formed on December 18, 1978, as the first anti-terrorist unit for carrying out sensitive security tasks.
The ceremony was attended by Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic, Head of the President’s Cabinet and Secretary of the National Security Council Miodrag Rakic, Director of the Security and Intelligence Agency Sasa Vukadinovic, Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas, diplomatic representatives and Interior Ministry officials.
Addressing those present, Dacic said that the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit plays an important role in the fight against all forms of terrorism, crime and corruption, one of the primary tasks of the Interior Ministry and the government.
The SAJ continues the tradition of the police unit for special operations, which was originally part of the Secretariat for the Interior of the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia.
That was the first and for many years the only anti-terrorist unit of the Serbian police, intended for performing the most complex security tasks. SAJ is one of the best trained units of its kind in Europe and its existence shows Serbia's continuity in the fight against terrorism, Dacic said.
