During a meeting today with Governor Waltraud Klasnic of the Austrian province of Styria, Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica pointed to the importance of cooperation between the two countries and also between districts, as is the case with Vojvodina and Styria. Kostunica also said that multiethnic and multicultural regions represent treasures not only for the region but also for Europe.
Kostunica stressed that Serbia-Montenegro is committed to European integration and added that the message from the Maastricht meeting of EU foreign ministers was encouraging.
Klasnic stressed the importance of the good relations that exists between Serbia-Montenegro and Austria, as well as between the provinces of Vojvodina and Styria, and she said that the cooperation should be expanded to other districts.
Kostunica recalled that Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija are in a difficult position, with their human rights endangered, and he added that the implementation of the Serbian government’s Plan for Kosovo-Metohija would ensure additional institutional guarantees for the Serbs living in the province.
Both officials agreed that the status of Southern Tyrol is a good example of the protection of minorities and their territorial and cultural autonomy.
Serbian Prime Minister pointed to the importance of economic cooperation between Serbia-Montenegro and Austria and called for its improvement, adding that the Serbian government wishes to pass legislation to make foreign investment safer and to reduce red tape.
