Serbia, Cyprus to improve cooperation in higher education

The Serbian Ministry of Education stated that Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic and Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus Andreas Demetriou talked at their meeting today about cooperation in the field of education between Serbia and Cyprus carried out so far and about similarities between the educational systems of the two countries.

The two officials expressed interest in further cooperation, especially in the field of higher education, because both countries are members of the European Space of Higher Education and signatories of the Bologna declaration.

Cooperation in the field of higher education between Serbia and Cyprus will enable greater mobility of students and teachers and exchange of experiences, which will increase the quality of teaching in the higher education institutions of both countries.

Obradovic and Demetriou also discussed the content of a future cooperation agreement in the field of education, science and culture, which should be signed in early 2010.

Demetriou proposed the formation of a Serbian-Cypriot expert working group which will deal with all aspects of cooperation between the two countries in the field of education.

During the two-day visit to Belgrade, Demetriou also met with Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration and Minister for Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic, Minister of Culture Nebojsa Bradic and Minister of Youth and Sports Snezana Samardzic-Markovic, as well as with the President of Belgrade University Branko Kovacevic.

Demetriou thanked Belgrade and Serbia for hospitality and made an official invitation to Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic to make a return visit to the Cypriot Ministry of Education and Culture.

Cypriot Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou has been on a two-day visit to Belgrade, from November 24 and 25, at the invitation of Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic, it is added in the statement.
