Samardzic-Markovic unanimously elected to WADA Foundation Board

The Ministry of Youth and Sports stated that at the meeting of the European Committee for the World Anti-Doping Agency (CAHAMA), Minister of Youth and Sport Snezana Samardzic-Markovic has been unanimously elected as a European representative on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) Foundation Board for the period 2010–2012.

This will be the first time Serbia has had a representative in this organisation. Minister Samardzic-Markovic said this is a great honour for Serbia and her Ministry and a huge recognition to Serbian sport because previously Serbia did not have a representative in this body.

She said that her candidacy has political dimensions as well, explaining that this is a huge and positive change which shows trust in Serbian institutions.

She stressed that Serbia is no longer just an observer, but will actively contribute to pan-European politics in an international organisation.

Serbia deserves to have a laboratory for anti-doping control. That would be a great step forward for our sport, the Minister stressed.

Europe as a continent has five representatives in WADA and Minister Samardzic-Markovic will be one of them.

Before her candidacy was affirmed by CAHAMA, the Minister addressed the gathering speaking about Serbia’s position in the region, the way it will defend the interests of Europe and WADA and her Ministry’s priorities when it comes to cooperation between the government and NGO sectors.

WADA was founded in 1999 as an independent international organisation comprising an equal number of representatives from the sport movement and governments of the entire world.

It is made up of the Foundation Board, the Executive Committee and various committees (committee for athletes, expert group for ethical issues, educational committee, committee for finances and administration, committee for medicine, health and research.)
