The Ministry of the Interior stated today that the European Commission has decided that all EU member states are obliged to introduce the second generation of biometric passports, which will contain fingerprint chips.
This will enable travellers to use automatic gates at the borders of states that have highly developed systems of passport control.
For Serbia it is very important to introduce this system as soon as possible in view of the pending visa liberalisation. In the period between November 18 and December 1, the Ministry of the Interior will reconfigure the passport issuing system.
All citizens who already received biometric passports without fingerprint chips will not have to change their passports because they will be valid until their expiry date and will be as equally valid as the new generation of passports, it is added in the statement.
