Sutanovac, Miletic to attend MEDCEUR in Nis

The Ministry of Defence stated that Minister Dragan Sutanovac will attend the practical part of the Medical Central and Eastern Europe Exercise (MEDCEUR) on September 10 in Nis, aimed at demonstrating how to provide assistance to the civilian population after major accidents and natural disasters.

The statement adds that the exercise, scheduled for September 2–13, will be carried out by 600 participants from 14 countries. Chief of the Serbian Army General Staff General-Major Miloje Miletic will also attend the practical part of the exercise.

The goal is to train military medical staff to take care of the injured in large-scale catastrophes, including earthquakes, fires, chemical and other accidents where there is a large number of injured and huge damage to property.

Serbia will host this exercise for the first time, although it has been carried out for several years in Central and Eastern European countries.

Charge d’Affairs at the US embassy in Belgrade Jennifer Brush will also attend the exercise, along with Chiefs of Army General Staff from Montenegro and Croatia, Vice-Admiral Dragan Samardzic and General Josip Lucic respectively.

Chief surgeon of the US Air forces in Europe General Major Robert Daily will also be in Nis, as well as foreign military representatives on attachment in Serbia and officials from the Red Cross Serbia, the Serbian Ministry of the Interior and other relevant ministries.

Having attended lectures and courses, participants will perform the practical part of the exercise on September 10 at the Car Konstantin airport in Nis.

Serbian Army representatives took part in previous exercises on Moldova and Croatia, together with the other countries that are members of the Partnership for Peace programme.

Representatives from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Ukraine and the USA are taking part in the exercise, the statement adds.
