According to a statement, the National Council normally avoids commenting on decisions by the ICTY but it is hoped that this sentence will, at least to some extent, provide justice to the families of the victims, bearing in mind the severity and heinous nature of the crimes that were committed against the civilian population of Visegrad.
It is the opinion of the National Council that this sentence will contribute to the process of confronting the past, establishing the rule of law and bringing about reconciliation.
The National Council also pointed out that Milan Lukic was tried and convicted “in absentia” in Serbia and given the maximum prison sentence of 20 years, for the abduction and murder of residents of Sjeverin in 1992.
The National Council once again stresses that Serbia is fully committed to uncovering the truth about crimes committed, to providing justice for the victims and their families and to establishing responsibility regarding each crime.
