Spasojevic opens Serbia, US bilateral defence consultations

The Defence Ministry stated that State Secretary Dusan Spasojevic has opened bilateral consultations on defence between Serbia and the US, which are taking place in Serbia for the first time.
In a meeting with the US delegation, led by Joseph MacMillan, it was agreed that cooperation over defence is excellent and that partner relations can help solve regional security issues, Spasojevic said.
All aspects of cooperation between the two sides have been considered and priorities for future cooperation have been established. During the recent visit of US Vice President Joe Biden it was agreed that good military cooperation is a precondition for good political and economic relations.
Serbia would like to use all the mechanisms of the Partnership for Peace programme in order to successfully implement defence reforms and establish a modern defence system.
Spasojevic informed the US delegation of the current security situation in southern Serbia emphasising that cooperation between the Serbian security forces and KFOR must be improved. He added that the decision on reducing the number of KFOR troops in Kosovo must be revised.
The previous bilateral defence consultations between Serbia and the USA were held in 2007 in Washington DC, concludes the statement.
