Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with a delegation from the World Jewish Congress, headed by Vice President Israel Singer. Kostunica said that there is a strong understanding between Serbs and Jews and thanked the Congress for its support for Kosovo-Metohija Serbs who were expelled from their homes following the March pogrom in the province.
Singer expressed readiness to boost cooperation between the Congress and Serbia, stressing that the organisation wants to cooperate with all Jewish communities worldwide, including the one in Serbia.
Kostunica underlined the importance of preserving the state union of Serbia-Montenegro and added that Serbia-Montenegro's integration into the European Union is important for regional stability. According to the Prime Minister, the process of EU integration is not complete without the Western Balkan countries.
European Jewish Congress President Cobi Benatoff also attended the meeting, stressing that problems in the Western Balkans should be resolved through compromise.
