President of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) George Killian told the participants not to leave Belgrade without becoming friends with someone.
Belgrade is a historic city in which we will mark the 60th anniversary of FISU’s foundation and the 50th anniversary of the Universiade, Killian said.
The Universiade opened to the sounds of the Serbian national anthem ‘Lord of Justice’ after which all participants marched past bearing their national flags.

President Boris Tadic, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic, Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic and Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas also attended the opening ceremony.
The university torch, which opened the Universiade in Belgrade Arena, was carried from the centre of Belgrade by 15 different bearers and reached the Arena at 9 pm.
Over 7,000 athletes from 144 countries attended the opening at the Arena.
At the 25th summer university games over 8,500 participants will compete in 15 sport disciplines.
The Universiade will last from July 1 until July 12.
