Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation to Serbia-Montenegro Cristian Bruner. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the ICRC's humanitarian work in Serbia-Montenegro, especially concerning the displaced and missing persons from Kosovo-Metohija and former Yugoslavia.
The Prime Minister stressed that there is a high number of Serbs and non-Albanians who fled Kosovo-Metohija, of whom two-thirds are in Serbia. He said that the number of returnees is very low, and that Serbs in the province have not been given additional institutional guarantees which would ensure them the right to life, survival and return of the displaced.
Cristian Bruner expressed regret over the fact that 1,500 families in Serbia still do not have any information about the whereabouts of their loved ones who disappeared. He said that the ICRC will continue to work hard on tracing the missing.
