Results of first stage of health project presented

The Ministry of Health stated that results of the first stage of the project "Developing the Serbian Health System“, financed from World Bank loans, have been presented and new joint projects announced.

The statement adds that speakers at the gathering on health system reforms were Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic, Director of the World Bank Office in Serbia Simon Gray, Director of the World Bank Health Sector for Europe and Central Asia Abdo Jazbek, State Secretary of Health Nevena Karanovic and others.

Realisation of the first stage of the project "Developing the Serbian Health System“ in the period 2004–2009, worth €20 million, represents strong support for reforms of initiative and activities of the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Serbian Health Insurance Office, Public Health Institute Milan Jovanovic Batut and numerous other institutions in Serbia, the region and Europe.

Four regional general hospitals in Kraljevo, Valjevo, Vranje and Zrenjanin were restructured, renovated and equipped. The goal of the project was to constantly improve quality and create and implement a national policy.

Project activities also included preparations for setting up the Agency for Accreditation of Health Centres, founded in October 2008, which will help to raise the quality of medical services.

A resource data base was also formed containing data about all health institutions, employees and medical equipment.

During the project, certain funds were invested in facilities for producing the flu vaccine at the Torlak Immunology and Virology Institute, whose goal is to save funds and put an end to the dependency on imported vaccines in case of a pandemic, such as avian flu.

Results of the first stage of the project have secured the World Bank’s further support and it therefore approved another €10.5 million for the project’s continuation over the next three years.

The World Bank also granted €32 million to the Delivery of Improved Local Services project (DILS), of which sum the Ministry of Health will receive €13 million, while the rest will be at the disposal of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, concludes the statement.
