Serbian lawmakers vote in new parliament speaker

The Serbian parliament voted 150 to 82 to elect Predrag Markovic of the G17 Plus as new parliament speaker on Thursday.

Markovic, who was a parliament deputy speaker, will also serve as Serbian caretaker president.
Markovic was backed by deputies from the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), the G17 Plus, the Serbian Renewal Movement - New Serbia (SPO-NS) coalition and the Democratic Party (DS). Serbian Radical Party (SRS) deputies voted against his appointment.
Emilija Krstic of the DSS and Dusan Petrovic of the DS were voted in as deputy speakers in the parliament.
Dragan Marsicanin stepped down as parliament speaker on Wednesday after he was appointed the new Serbian Minister of Economy.
