Over 150 countries mark Earth Day

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Spatial Planning stated that over 150 countries world wide marked Earth Day today.
The statement adds that on this year’s Earth Day a global campaign called Green Generation began and will last until next year, when the 40th anniversary of this day will be celebrated.
The plan is to include citizens in the Green Generation network before the next year who will initiate individual or collective activities to solve issues such as climate change and the global crisis over water supplies.
Furthermore, a decision on the new agreement on climate change will be made in December 2009, replacing the current Kyoto Protocol.
This is why this year’s celebration of the Earth Day will focus on citizens’ initiatives when it comes to renewable energy sources and the reduction of our dependence on fossil fuels, the engagement of individuals in sustainable consumption, the creation of a new ’green’ economy to reduce poverty and the introduction of environmental issues to the education system.
The ministry supports a global and individual campaign aimed at environmental protection and in line with that it initiated the campaign ‘Let’s Clean Serbia’, together with citizens, local self-governments, the business sector and the media.
Apart from clearing up a number of illegal dumps in Serbia the plan is to solve the waste management issue, as well as to initiate an educational campaign on the need for environmental protection.
Today, on Earth Day, a set of 16 laws on environmental protection are pending adoption in the Serbian parliament, recalls the statement.
