Malovic on visit to Strasbourg

Serbian Minister of Justice Snezana Malovic will take a working visit to Strasbourg from April 14 to 15, where she will meet with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis and other officials.

According to the Ministry’s statement, Malovic will inform Davis about Serbia’s progress in the implementation of judicial reforms, which are needed to enhance the legal security of Serbian citizens.

Malovic will present Serbia’s progress concerning the fight against organised crime, which will also be mentioned in a report of the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO), which is monitoring Serbia in this respect.

The Minister will inform the Council of Europe’s officials of Serbia’s intention to consistently implement the Law on the confiscation of illegally obtained property and the Law on organised crime, which will facilitate the suppression of organised crime.

The Minister said that the visit will be of considerable importance for the Council of Europe’s further support to democratic reforms in Serbia, as well as that it will speed up its EU integration process, bearing in mind the importance of the opinion of the Council of Europe experts on Brussels.

During the visit to Brussels Malovic will present Davis with ratification instruments and European conventions recently adopted by the Serbian parliament, which refer to the Council of Europe standards adopted in Serbia’s legal system when it comes to hi-tech crime, the fight against terrorism and the confiscation of property obtained through criminal actions. Thus Serbia will affirm its determination to fight organised crime and corruption, adds the statement.

The Minister will also meet with Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Secretary General Mateo Sorinas, Secretary General for Legal Issues Phillip Boaya, as well as with Director General for Legal Issues Jean-Louis Lorraine to discuss setting up the rule of law and legal safeguards in Serbia, which will be considerably improved once the new laws are implemented. On April 15 the Minister will meet with the Venetian Commission Deputy Secretary Thomas Markert and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammamberg. Assistant Minister for EU Integration and International Projects Dragana Lukic will also be in the delegation visiting Strasbourg.
