Milosavljevic to attend WHO conference

The Serbian Ministry of Health stated that Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic will attend the World Health Organisation (WHO) European Ministerial conference “Health in times of global economic crisis”, which will be held from April 1 to 2 in Oslo, Norway.

According to the statement issued by the Ministry, Milosavljevic will be one of the main speakers on the first day of the conference and will speak about challenges to the Serbian health system management caused by the economic crisis.

The first session will be about the effects of the economic crisis on health systems and the consequences of the crisis for European member states and it will be chaired by WHO Regional Director for Europe Marc Danzon. Speakers at the first session will include Milosavljevic, Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Professor of Health Economy at York University Alan Maynard and Professor of Economy at Pompeu Fabra University Guillem López-Casasnovas.

The conference is being held for the propose of examining the situation in the WHO European region and to identify the main risks to health and health systems as well as the various actions that could be taken, to discuss measures that should be implemented to respond to the effects of the financial crisis on health systems and the consequences of the crisis for health systems in underdeveloped, developing and developed European countries. Short and mid term measures will be suggested for dealing with the effects of the economic crisis and long term measures for resolving structural issues.

Discussion will be focused on key issues, how is the economic crisis affecting health and health systems in Europe, what needs to be done in order to improve health services and reduce the incidence of disease, how to make health systems effective in reducing poverty and social inequalities in present and future difficult conditions and how to maintain and strengthen required strategies for action during the crisis.
