Serbia ready to imprison Hague convicts

The National Council for Cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has contacted the UN Secretary General and the President of the Hague Tribunal regarding Serbia’s initiative to transfer those sentenced by the court to their respective countries to serve prison sentences.
According to a statement issued by the National Council, the letters from the Council state that Serbia is ready to accept Serbian citizens sentenced by the ICTY, is willing to provide maximum security conditions at the locations where they will serve their sentence and offers firm guarantees that those sentenced will not be released without the permission of the tribunal.
Bearing in mind the ICTY’s strategy for finishing its work, the National Council considers that the decision to allow prisoners to serve sentences in their respective countries would be very useful, because it would prove that the international community has confidence in the countries created following the break up of former Yugoslavia.
