Serbia’s presidency over UNEP Governing Council session declared most efficient

The Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning yesterday stated that the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) declared the 25th session of the Governing Council of the Global Ministerial Environment Forum, chaired by Minister Oliver Dulic, the most efficient so far.
The statement says that environmental ministers and heads of delegations from 147 member states, as well as NGOs, representatives from the international scientific forum and other interested parties, took part in the Governing Council session, held on February 16–20 in Nairobi.
The ministers and heads of delegations agreed that man’s relation towards the environment and the development achieved so far are no longer acceptable from the point of view of environmental protection and mankind’s survival.
One of the conclusions is that the current social and economic issues and the global crisis demand an innovative approach and new solutions, reads the statement.
It was also concluded that the solution to the economic crisis and consequences of climate changes can be solved by encouraging green economy, that is, through the use of renewable energy sources and creating new green jobs in the environmental protection sector.
The Serbian delegation said that while conducting programme priorities, UNEP should be equally committed to the needs of developing states and states undergoing transition.
During the Global Ministerial Forum, decisions were adopted defining international guidelines for chemical management, particularly mercury, as well as decisions defining international guidelines in environmental protection, waste management, UNEP water management strategies and similar.
UNEP’s two-year agenda was also adopted, as well as the budget for the period 2010–2011 totalling $180 million, reads the statement, adding that according to this document, UNEP’s activities will be focused on achieving results in line with six priority strategic areas.
These are climate changes, accidents and conflicts, ecosystem management, environmental management, hazardous materials and waste management and efficient resource usage, that is, sustainable production and spending.
Dulic will chair the Governing Council of the Global Ministerial Environment Forum over the next two years, during which time he will take part in the Governing Council’s committee meetings, as well as numerous international gatherings, adds the statement.
