Speaking on Fox TV Jeremic said that the UN should determine a precise schedule for the discussion, adding that Belgrade expects UNMIK Chief Lamberto Zannier and his associates to initiate the talks.
He said that he hopes that the talks will begin this or the next week, adding that during
his visit to New York last week, when the UN Security Council decided to implement the six-item plan, the security situation in Pristina was cited as the reason for Zannier’s inability to visit Belgrade this week.
I hope that the situation in Pristina will improve so that Zannier is able to come to Belgrade and discuss the Security Council decision, said Jeremic.
He stressed that Belgrade cannot hold direct talks with Pristina on the issue because agreement was reached regarding the six-item plan with the UN.
Talks with Pristina can be held only on the issue of Kosovo’s status, said Jeremic, recalling that these talks were terminated because of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence one year ago.
He said that the attempt to impose a solution for the Kosovo issue is dangerous because it has undermined international order, adding that this is why Serbia has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to establish the legality of Kosovo’s independence.
He said that Serbia was successful in the UN regarding this matter and the ICJ will give its opinion in a couple of years.
He said that Kosovo is not the member of a single international organisation which is a proof that Serbian diplomacy was successful.
He said that only a minority of UN member states has recognized Kosovo and this is not likely to change in 2009.
He said that the EU has no stance on the future status of Kosovo but individual EU member states have each their own position regarding the issue.
He reiterated that it is very important that Serbia’s EU integration and efforts to resolve the Kosovo issue remain two separate processes.
We have asked the EU to send a mission to Belgrade to verify that Serbia is fully cooperating with the Hague tribunal, said the Minister, adding that Serbia will continue to make efforts to conclude cooperation.
