Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Sasa Dragin, who last year in his capacity as minister of environmental protection took over Serbia’s ICPDR presidency, officially handed over the presidency to State Secretary at the Slovak Ministry of Environment Jarolsav Jadus.
Dragin, who presented Jadus with a bottle of water from the Danube, said in a statement to the Tanjug news agency that during its presidency Serbia adopted nine very important conventions in the area of environmental protection.
He said that during that period Serbia began the biggest water cleansing project which was strongly supported by the Czech Republic and Norway.
We have succeeded in defining aims within the ICPDR such as establishing a geographic informational system which will automatically monitor the quality of water in the Danube, said Dragin.
He said that some agreements between member states have been defined such as reducing the use of detergents that contain phosphate to free the river from this pollutant.
He said that the process of conserving the Danube began in 1994 with the formation of the ICPDR and voiced hope that the Slovak presidency will advance this process and projects already begun will be continued.
