Wreaths were laid by representatives from the Association of the Jewish Municipalities in Serbia, the Ministry of Education, the City of Belgrade, Israeli Ambassador to Serbia Arthur Koll and the Museum of Genocide Victims.
During this commemorative event, Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic said that Nazism led to the deaths of millions of innocent people, adding that we must do all we can to prevent such crimes ever reoccurring.
We must fight against anti-Semitism and discrimination. Serbia must create educational and cultural systems that will promote antifascism. We can proudly say that there is no anti-Semitism in Serbia and that Serbian schools respect the memory of the Holocaust victims, said Obradovic.
The Minister recalled that the Nazi used to shoot 100 Serbs for every dead German soldier and 50 Serbs for every wounded.
Obradovic also pointed to the Jasenovac concentration camp, where several hundred thousand Serbs, Jews and Roma were killed.
He said that this event is an opportunity to convey a message of peace, understanding and cooperation.
The Minister recalled that almost 6 million Jews were killed all over Europe during World War Two, which is the largest loss ever.
The Belgrade City Assembly President Aleksandar Antic said that it is of major importance to never forget the victims of the Holocaust and to teach future generations to fight against fascism.
