Sutanovac, who met with Iraqi officials in Baghdad, said the Iraqis are very satisfied with the new Lazar armoured vehicle, manufactured by the company Jugoimport SDPR.
He recalled that Jugoimport SDPR signed a contract last year with the Iraqi Defence Ministry concerning the export of weapons and military equipment worth $234 million.
He stressed that Serbia is developing a strong defence industry which the state should support, adding that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki and Defence Minister Abdul Qadir are satisfied with the quality and speed of deliveries, which will help expand cooperation.
Sutanovac talked with Abdul Qadir about the possibility of Iraqi students studying at the Military Academy in Belgrade. He said that a great deal of interest was shown for training members of Iraqi special units and ground forces in Serbia.
He stressed that the Serbian defence system can respond to these challenges so that our country can finally establish a long term relationship with Iraq.
He said that Iraq is also interested in training its pilots in Serbia and by purchasing the Serbian Lasta planes has become a regular buyer, adding that he also talked with Iraqi officials about Serbian construction companies returning to do business in Iraq.
He said that on behalf of Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic he invited Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki to visit Serbia so that the two leaders may discuss how to improve cooperation in the building industry and other areas.
Sutanovac expressed gratitude to the Iraqi Prime Minister for Iraq’s principled stance on the Kosovo issue.
He said that he has invited Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bulani to visit Serbia and meet with Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic to discuss mutual cooperation.
I am convinced that our criminal police academy can offer training in Serbia, said Sutanovac.
