130 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia, Italy

The Serbian Ministry of Defence has stated that a delegation of the ministry opened today in Rome a series of events to mark 130 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Italy.
According to the statement State Secretary at the Defence Ministry Dusan Spasojevic, who is leading the delegation, said in his speech that the last 130 years were politically, diplomatically and militarily extremely eventful and that there had been several ups and downs in relations between Serbia and Italy.
He said that despite this we can talk about friendship between the two nations, which can be seen in our excellent military cooperation, which is contributing not only to the improvement of overall bilateral relations but also to regional stability.
The Serbian Defence Ministry and the Serbian Army are taking part in all major regional initiatives and within their field cooperate excellently with the Italian Defence Ministry and the Italian armed forces, said Spasojevic.
Speaking about the political and security situation in the region, particularly in Kosovo, Spasojevic presented the main elements of Serbia’s policy towards the issue, stressing that Serbia will never recognise Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.
He said that Serbia is very dissatisfied with the fact that KFOR is taking part in the formation of the so called Kosovo security forces, which presents a serious potential threat to regional peace and stability.
He presented the priorities of the Defence Ministry in the upcoming period, especially in the area of international military cooperation.
Italian Undersecretary of Defence Giuseppe Cossiga expressed satisfaction that bilateral military cooperation had reached a high level and stressed that it does not often happen that military cooperation is the starting point for overall bilateral cooperation.
Italy fully supports Serbia on its EU road, Cossiga stressed, expressing hope that obstructions on that road will soon be removed.
Major General Dragan Katanic presented the results of military reform in Serbian Army while General Domenico Vilani spoke on behalf of the Italian Army.
The marking of 130 years of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Italy will last until January 23.
