Ciplic stressed that according to the NGO
Freedom House’s report Serbia is a free country with a fairly high level of political and human rights, adding that Serbia could have been evaluated even higher, but as a country in the process of transition, it has not yet completely established its political system.
The Minister pointed to the importance of human rights, saying that further development in this respect depends solely on Serbia.
Ciplic said that Serbia is a free country, as its state bodies do not jeopardise human rights any more.
Ciplic pointed to Freedom House’s reputation and authority, saying that the EU knows very well that the situation in Serbia in terms of its human rights policy is stable.
He said that Serbia has problems with the Hague tribunal, which are not related to its political rights but to the competency of its authorities, adding that this report is evidence that Serbia has made progress regarding its cooperation with the Hague tribunal.
Ciplic stressed that Serbia must also deal with the problem of corruption, as that is a precondition for its EU future.
According to Ciplic the biggest enemies of human rights are poverty and the lack of education and tolerance.
