National Council for Cooperation with ICTY responds to prosecution requests

The National Council for Cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) held its first session in 2009 today and passed a decision to both provide documents to and to meet four requests from the Hague tribunal’s prosecution.

According to a statement issued by the Council, a positive response was given to nine requests by the defence.

The National Council stated that, concerning matters such as the availability of state archives, the submission of documents and releasing military, state and intelligence officials from the oath of secrecy, Serbia has cooperated fully and efficiently with the Hague tribunal and currently there are no pending requests.

Bearing this in mind the National Council holds the opinion that the EU should show flexibility and make it possible to implement the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, thus contributing to the EU integration process in Serbia.

The National Council will present detailed reports on the cooperation between Serbia and the ICTY to EU officials in Brussels and the Foreign Ministry of the Netherlands. A similar report has already been presented to the Security Council.

Keeping in view the importance of this issue for Serbia’s further EU integration the National Council will continue to inform all relevant international institutions and the general public about Serbia’s cooperation with the ICTY.
